Farriers Discuss Hoof Care
Thrush can get very serious if treatment isn't aggressive enough to be effective. First off, thrush is a fungus
that thrives where he stands most of the time. Keep his stall and/or run as clean and dry as possible.
My vet recommends using a garden or
rose fungus powder or spray mixed in the shavings or ground where he stands to kill the ground fungus that's contributing to his problem.
Please DO NOT allow the powder or spray fungus killer to contaminate his food or water!!
Clean the affected areas of his hoof as throughly as possible using the brush,
scrapper, and pick sides of your hoof pick. Apply Sound Shot Thrush Flush
to the affected areas of his hoof, allowing the treatment to soak in
a bit before you set his hoof down. Apply daily, until you see a noticable change in the condition. Then you can reduce
treatment to 3 x per week until the thrush is gone.
Remember to keep an eye on him for awhile and if the thrush shows signs of reappearing, treat his stall again and increase the frequency of applying
thrush treatment to the hoof.
Research has shown that you increase soundness problems when a horse is shod with a material that is too soft with too much traction.
We developed the composite plastic material used in our
horseshoes to mimic the natural shore hardness of a healthy hoof. This latest development in horseshoe technology accomodates
the shore hardeness of a healthy hoof without the unforgiving nature of metal shoes.
The biggest benefit of using composite horseshoes involve improved circulation into the frog and hoof. Also, composite horseshoes provide
an easier surface for your horse to stand on than metal. If your horse is suffering from navicular, laminitis or founder,
or any arthritic problems such as ringbone, you'll reduce the pain and help your horse become comfortably sound again by using composites.
The circulatory benefits of using composite horseshoes has been documented
by thermal imaging.
ICE HORSE® Cold therapy reduces the risk of tendon/ligament injuries and hock joint inflamation in working horses.
We also feature the ICE HORSE® Boot, a hoof boot with a composite horseshoe attached for dry cold treating laminitis or stone bruise
inflamation in the hoof.
