Farriers Discuss Hoof Care

A Quarter Crack Left in the Dust

Pat and Judy Hubbert dealt with the same quarter crack problem for two years. They were told by a fellow horsewoman, Jo Anne Carollo (owner of the APHA stallion we featured in our January 1999 newsletter) how the Hoof-it team treated her horse's quarter crack problem.

Two years of little improvement made Pat and Judy willing to try anything so Pat called the Hoof-it team and said, "Sign me up."

A week later Hoof-it farrier Steve Samet went to work on the Hubberts' horse Smokes Mr. Nic (Mr.). Steve used Hoof-it's composite horseshoes for support and comfort and stabilized the cracks with Hoof-it acrylic resin. Pat was able to ride Mr. right away.

Steve came back 4 weeks later to check Mr.'s progress. The cracks had healed down from the coronet band. Steve put regular sliding shoes on. Much to Pat's and Judy's amazement, Mr. was able to work cows.

At 5 weeks, Mr. was show ready . . . first stop was the Rancho Murrieta Horse Show. Mr. was completely back in full action, scoring 73‡ points in the cutting, and then went right back in to the working cow class and picked up his final points to qualify for both classes for the upcoming 1999 AQHA World Show.

Owner and rider Pat Hubbert commented with a smile, "Mr. is working like he did 2 years ago, before the quarter cracks." The quarter cracks are growing out and a new solid hoof is growing in.

As of this writing, Mr.'s quarter cracks are completely gone. We will keep you updated on Mr.'s performance.
