Farriers Discuss Hoof Care
Dear Hoof-it Team:
I just wanted to thank you for sending Ron White, my farrier, a trial pair of Marathons.
I have a mare with an old injury in her hoof (fractured coffin bone) that I have had off and on lameness with. I got her as a
broodmare. But then I rode her to get her in shape for breeding and foaling. She's such a wonderful sweet horse to ride, I wanted to do
whatever I could to help her.
I've been playing with different ways of shoeing her to make her comfortable. Conventional shoes
seemed to cause reverberation up through the hoof and she would start bobbing after being on the trail for a while. I was also using only
Easy Boots on the front. They worked great, but took extra time getting on and off every time I went out.
I was getting pretty frustrated when Ron gave me a call and said he had a trial pair of Marathons. I asked if we could put them
on Libby and see how she does. They worked great!! She started doing so good, I was planning and training for her first 50-mile race.
Unfortunately, she hurt a tendon in her back leg the weekend before the ride.
I like the fact that I was able to get 2 good resets
even with all the training mileage. I reset them a third time because she wasn't being ridden at the time. I actually got 3 resets from 1
pair of shoes. Another great thing about the shoes is, if a horse over reaches and grabs the front shoe, it flexes and pops back into place
instead of being pulled off. That could mean less ankle problems from having shoes yanked off.
I like the shoes so well I'm trying
them on my other race mare that I'm having ankle swelling on. Hopefully, she'll be able to do either Castle Rock 50 or Big Creek 70 in May.
I'm probably going to use them as my gelding's first set of shoes also.
I'm passing the word on to other friends. I have a friend that
is interested in trying a set on her endurance horse. I'll keep you posted on how well they're working as soon as my horses are recuperated.
Sincerely,
Dian Woodward
